DESCRIPTION:Paddy D (Paddy Dougherty) and the Quartet will bring you new songs and old favorites. Baine’s Books and Coffee will be open from 6:15 pm to 7 pm and again at intermission for you to buy non-alcoholic drinks\, sandwiches and desserts. \nVirginia based singer-songwriter\, Paddy Dougherty\, returns to Second Stage with her bandmates of thirty years. They will perform their own mix of soulful blues\, jazzy ballads\, and commanding originals. \nPaddy\, well known regionally as the voice of the award winning band\, Mainstreet Rhythm & Blues\, spent time on the road as a backup singer for national bluesman\, David Bromberg. She had several of her songs fully orchestrated by legendary arranger\, Charles Callelo and performed in concert with the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and Rita Coolidge. For five years\, she toured as a songwriter with Kid Pan Alley writing hundreds of songs for thousands of children. After nearly thirty years of teaching music\, Paddy retired from the classroom to return to the stage with consummate musicians Larry Scott/drums\, Glenn Buck/keyboards and saxophone\, and RobinTolley/bass. \nAmherst Glebe Arts Response (AGAR) is pleased to be able to welcome the quartet back to celebrate Spring!

SUMMARY:All Creatures Great and Small
DESCRIPTION:Cantate Children’s and Youth Choir will present its annual spring concert\, “All Creatures\nGreat and Small\,” on Sunday\, May 3\, 2026\, at 4:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church. \nNow in its thirty-third season\, Cantate is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing healthy vocal training and exceptional musical experiences for children and youth throughout Central  Virginia. The choir is comprised of 40 singers ages 7 to 18 from Lynchburg and the surrounding communities. \nInspired by John Rutter’s lovely setting of “All things bright and beautiful\,” the program’s theme celebrates creatures that swim\, fly\, and walk. The concert opens with several 17th-century canons about deer\, cranes\, and a swan. Among music depicting creatures that swim are Franz Schubert’s famous art song “Die Forelle” (“The Trout”) and Emma Lou Diemer’s charming “Dolphins.”\nSelections featuring creatures that fly range from French children’s songs about hens to lively pieces about birds\, bees\, and crickets. Creatures that walk are represented through a setting of the spiritual “All God’s Children Got Shoes” and a Spanish song about a boy and his burro. The concert concludes with the delightful “All God’s Critters Got a Place in the Choir” by Bill Staines\, arranged by Erica Phare-Bergh\, featuring fiddle and piano accompaniment. \nPeggy Haas Howell serves as Music Director and Conductor\, with Elizabeth Wilkinson as Assistant Director and Accompanist. In addition to her role at Cantate\, Ms. Howell is Organist and Choirmaster at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg\, and serves as National Vice President and Councillor for Competitions and New Music for the American Guild of Organists. Ms. Wilkinson is Organist and Choir Director at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Lynchburg.\nMs. Howell has directed Cantate since 2009. Under her leadership\, the choir has performed with Opera on the James\, the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra\, the Charlottesville Ballet\, the University of Lynchburg Choral Union\, the Jefferson Choral Society\, the University of Virginia Chamber Singers\, and the Parish Choir of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She previously founded and directed the Jefferson Youth Chorale (2003–2012) and served as Director of Chorale at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (1996–2000). \nThe concert is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Quantum Mechanics Jazz: "Back In Time"
DESCRIPTION:Come on out\, tap your toes\, and listen and remember as Ed Mikenas (console steel guitar)\, Andy Aeschbacher (bass)\, and Worth Proffitt (drums) play Western Swing and Early Jazz. Ticket price includes one free cup of coffee\, water\, or soda. Food is available for purchase from Baine’s Books & Coffee. \nIn addition to Western Swing and early jazz\, Ed will showcase a couple of autobiographical tunes from circa 1972 that have relative meaning for today. \nIn their unique musical style\, The Quantum Mechanics will explore the origins of Coffee and bring you some history\, stories\, trivia\, and tales of the Coffeehouse. They will play the Blues\, some Western Swing\, a little Be-bop\, and plenty of original tunes with a nod to Bach’s Coffee Cantata. You will also hear a swinging arrangement they call “A Round of Turkish Coffee” with apologies to Mozart. \nEd Mikenas (console steel guitar\, etc.) came to Virginia from New York City where he had played for television shows such as “Saturday Night Live\,” and at venues including Carnegie Hall\, Madison Square Garden\, and the Apollo. He played in the pit for Grease\, Pippin\, Godspell\, and The Magic Show on Broadway and was a musician and actor off Broadway with the La Mama Experimental Theatre. Ed is a multi-instrumentalist who has been the organist and choir director for Amherst Presbyterian Church since 2007. He taught bass at Radford University for 19 years. He is the jazz ensemble coach for Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg and is adjunct bass professor at the University of Lynchburg. Ed graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a BS in music education\, and has a Master’s degree in Music Performance from the Manhattan School of Music\, NYC. \nWorth Proffitt (drums) is another multi-instrumentalist well known in the Amherst area playing blues with Dennis Johnson in Jump Street and previously as half of Proffitt & Sandige\, both powerful acoustic blues duos. Worth studied blues with Mississippi blues heavyweight Lonnie Pitchford and North Carolina jazz legend\, Brother Jusef Salim. Worth’s blues projects have received numerous awards\, including: 1997 International Blues Challenge\, Charlotte\, NC (Jump Street) and 2004 International Blues Challenge\, Sedalia\, VA. Worth branches out into electric guitar territory as well\, playing rock ‘n’ roll and electric blues with Bill Hudson\, Jack Sutherland\, Malcolm Dentler\, Roy Slaughter. Larry Scott and others. He has been playing gospel guitar for two Lynchburg area churches since 1996: Saint Mark in Amherst and Saint Mary in Lowesville. \nAndy Aeschbacher (bass) is a native of Buffalo\, NY and a founding member of the Quantum Mechanics Jazz Trio who has played in Greater Lynchburg music groups including Quintana\, Feng Sway\, The MP3 Trio\, Code Blue\, Hill City Jazz\, Laurabella Trio\, The Introverts\, Deanie Blues Band\, The Dog Boys and Jimmy Rushing & the Prematures.
