Mission: JOY – Finding Happiness in Troubled Times

January 14 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

A look at the friendship between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the late Archbishop Tutu. The film goes behind the scenes at the Dalai Lama’s residence in Dharamsala, where Archbishop Tutu and the Dalai Lama recount stories from their lives. Directed by Academy Award-winner Louie Psihoyos and social impact producer Peggy Callahan, Mission Joy explores what the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu call “the joy practices”—a blend of spiritual, scientific, and psychological insights aimed at cultivating resilience, empathy, and inner peace. The film draws from conversations between these two leaders, giving us a glimpse into their personal experiences of hardship, oppression, and healing.
“This idea of joy as something beyond mere happiness is revolutionary,” notes Tutu in the film, “because it requires us to stay open to others, even when we’re in pain ourselves.” Similarly, the Dalai Lama reflects on compassion and connection as the basis of inner strength, emphasizing how joy can flourish even in the face of adversity.
